A newborn baby found dead Tuesday in a Dumpster in Simi Valley died of exposure, and detectives are treating the case as a homicide, Simi Valley police said Wednesday.
Results of an autopsy by the Ventura County coroner’s office showed that the infant girl might have been alive when she was left wrapped in a plastic garbage bag sometime Tuesday morning behind an Alpha Beta store in the 4400 block of Alamo Street, Sgt. Bob Robbins said.
The baby lived for two to three hours after her birth early Tuesday morning, Robbins said. Police did not know whether the girl died in the trash bin or was left there after dying somewhere else, he said, but detectives believe the infant was abandoned shortly after birth.
Police continued to search for the baby’s mother, Robbins said, appealing to her to contact them.
