Don Sleet, Leading Jazz Trumpeter, Dies at 48

Don Sleet, a jazz musician who from 1956 through 1958 was named Downbeat magazine’s trumpeter of the year, is dead of cancer.
He was 48 and died Dec. 31 at a Los Angeles hospital.
Sleet began with the Stan Kenton band in 1953 and over the years was seen with the Lighthouse All Stars, the Shelly Manne All Stars and the San Diego Philharmonic.
A memorial service has been scheduled at 1 p.m. Sunday at Pierce Bros. Hollywood Mortuary.
He is survived by his wife, Gayle; three children; his father; brother, sister and one granddaughter.
