A 2-year-old San Diego boy with “obvious signs of bruising” was pronounced dead Tuesday at an Island Avenue residence, Deputy Coroner Dan Matticks said.
Firefighters were called to the house at 5:34 p.m. but were unable to revive Gary Lydell Franklin Jr., who was found lying in a bed.
The boy’s mother, Veronica Canady, 23, was being interviewed by San Diego homicide detectives late Tuesday. The father, Gary Lydell Franklin Sr., 28, has been in San Diego County Jail since September on a narcotics charge, a jail official said.
The police child abuse unit took Canady’s 14-month-old child to the Hillcrest Receiving Home.
