Allie Schaff, dean of South Coast League football coaches, has resigned under pressure after 15 years at San Clemente High School.
Schaff had a 73-75-4 record at San Clemente and led the Tritons to the 1979 Central Conference championship game, which they lost to Esperanza, 14-7. The Tritons finished 4-6 last season, their best record in five years.
“I met with Allie last Friday to discuss the future of the program and afterward we mutually agreed it would be in the best interest of the program if Allie resigned,” said Principal James Krembas.
“I was given the choice of resigning or getting fired,” Schaff said. He will remain at the school as a physical education instructor.
Krembas said he hopes to name a new coach by early March.
