NCAA Penalizes UCLA for Ineligible Athlete

MISSION, Kan. — The NCAA said Tuesday an ineligible athlete competed for UCLA in the 1985 Division I women’s track and field championships.
The NCAA’s Committee on Infractions said the athlete’s performance in the 400-meter relay will be stricken from NCAA championship records, and four points earned by the relay team will be deleted from the team total. That drops the Bruins from a tie for fourth place to a tie for fifth.
The NCAA said the athlete, who was not identified, received monthly expense payments from the Canadian Track and Field Assn. under their Athletes Assistance Program. Such payments are prohibited by the NCAA.
