San Diego High School Basketball : Toolson Scores 28 to lead Valhalla to League Victory

SPRING VALLEY — The Monte Vista High School basketball team took advantage of a poor first-half shooting performance by visiting Valhalla to gain a 72-61 victory Tuesday night at Monte Vista.
Monte Vista (7-1, 10-3) is in sole possession of first place in the Grossmont League. Valhalla is 6-2, 10-5.
Valhalla, coming off a 9-of-33 performance from the field in the first half opened the second half by outscoring Monte Vista, 14-2, to cut the lead to 35-29.
But Valhalla never got closer than six points.
Wayne Hallman scored 20 points for Monte Vista. Valhalla’s Troy Toolson had a game-high 28 points, 14 in the fourth period.
In other Grossmont League action:
El Capitan 67, Santana 52--The only points Eric Lozoya scored came during a 10-0 one-man surge in the third period, giving El Capitan a 45-31 edge en route to the victory at El Capitan. Danny Curtis scored 16 points and Jason Berkshire added 15 to pace El Capitan (3-5, 7-7). Tim Barry led Santana (5-3, 9-6) with 19 points.
Mount Miguel 54, Grossmont 37--Chris Penman scored 11 points and Adam Wilson added 9 to lead Mount Miguel (5-3, 7-7) over visiting Grossmont ((3-5, 6-9). Lance Williams led Grossmont with 10 points.
El Cajon 46, Granite Hills 45 (OT)--Shaun Ellis scored with 19 seconds remaining in overtime for the victory at Granite Hills (3-5, 4-10). P.J. Panebianco paced El Cajon (4-4, 8-6) with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
GIRLS
GROSSMONT LEAGUE
Santana 71, El Capitan 34--Santana (8-0, 12-3) took a 15-4 first-quarter lead en route to the victory at El Capitan (3-5 in league). Leslie Ellis scored 27 points and Rebecca Aase added 18 to pace Santana. Carmen Stanley led El Capitan with 11 points.
Granite Hills 49, El Cajon 41--Julie Glancy scored 18 points to lead Granite Hills (2-6, 3-11) over visiting El Cajon. Gina Sparks led El Cajon with 18.
Grossmont 50, Mount Miguel 49--Grossmont, which held a 34-17 lead at the half, barely held off a late charge by host Mount Miguel (4-4, 8-7). Sharon Sodano scored 23 points and Shannon Embry added 15 for Grossmont (5-3, 12-4). Marla Swanson scored 19 points and Sharmelle Green had 18 for Mount Miguel.

PALOMAR LEAGUE
Torrey Pines 50, Fallbrook 41--Torrey Pines (2-3, 6-6) dominated the second half after trailing, 22-21, at halftime to Fallbrook. Sherri Straite paced Torrey Pines with 15 points. Lisa Rienstra led Fallbrook with 12 points.
AVOCADO LEAGUE
Oceanside 26, El Camino 22--Oceanside outscored El Camino, 10-5, in the fourth quarter to win its first league game. Nellie Malavulu led all scorers with 16 points for El Camino (2-1, 5-11). Mildred Conston had 13 points for Oceanside.
San Marcos 31, Ramona 27--San Marcos erupted for 10 points in the fourth quarter after entering the period behind, 23-21. Center Lisa Albertson scored 12 points for San Marcos. Christie Miller was the game’s leading scorer with 14 points to lead Ramona (3-1, 11-4).

METRO CONFERENCE
Montgomery 45, Hilltop 42--Lydia Castro paced Montgomery (3-3, 4-8) with 17 points and 8 rebounds, and Ana Tadilla added 16 points.
