Eight inmates escaped from a Sacramento County jail facility by smashing a window and cutting through bars, sheriff’s officials said. They said the eight men turned up missing during a routine head count at the Rio Consumnes Correctional Center, 27 miles south of downtown Sacramento. Sgt. Tennise Allen said officers found that a window had been smashed and bars cut in barracks that house inmates awaiting sentencing. She said ground and air searches and a canine patrol were trying to find the men.
