Hoyt Suspended for Drug Abuse

NEW YORK — LaMarr Hoyt, the American League’s 1984 Cy Young Award winner, today was suspended for a full season by baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth because of repeated involvement with illegal drugs.

The penalty was the most severe imposed by Ueberroth in his 2 1/2 years in office. Hoyt, whose career has declined since he led the Chicago White Sox to the 1984 American League West title, was involved in three illegal drug incidents during the past year. In the most recent, the 32-year-old right-hander pleaded guilty Nov. 13 to smuggling drugs across the Mexican border. He subsequently served a prison term. The San Diego Padres released him Jan. 7.
