Some Hostages Reported at Iran Embassy

KUWAIT — A Kuwaiti newspaper reported today that Shia Muslims holding foreign hostages in Lebanon have moved some captives to the Iranian Embassy in Beirut and others to south Lebanon to elude any Syrian effort to free them.
The daily newspaper Al Qabas said missing Anglican Church envoy Terry Waite is being held hostage and is among the captives moved to new hide-outs. But it did not say whether he is being held at the Iranian Embassy in the Hay Lija neighborhood of the Lebanese capital.
At the United Nations in New York, press officer Amir Zamani of the Iranian mission denied the report. “The charges are ridiculous. It’s a lie,” he said.
The Hay Lija neighborhood, inhabited mainly by Shia Muslims, is among the few remaining West Beirut districts where Syrian army units have not yet been deployed.
