The San Diego State rugby club team advanced to tonight’s final of the Pacific Coast Collegiate regionals with a 12-7 victory over Humbolt State Friday at UC Santa Barbara.
The Aztecs, the nation’s top-ranked team, will play defending national champion California tonight at 7 in Harder Stadium on the UCSB campus. The winner will meet three other regional winners from around the country in the national final four May 2-3 at Pebble Beach.
Cal (19-3) advanced to the final by defeating Long Beach State, 34-0. The Bears have won the national championship six of the last seven years.
The Aztecs’ points came on four Steve Forster penalty kick conversions.
THe Aztecs (26-1) led, 9-0, just before the half when Humbolt scored a try (four points) on an 80-yard breakaway. Humbolt missed the two-point conversion. In the second half the Aztecs’ forwards dominated the scrum, a key to controlling the game.
In the schools’ last meeting in January 1986, SDSU defeated Cal, 17-15.
