BEIJING — China on Friday invited its 1 billion people as well as Chinese living overseas to submit designs for a flag and emblem for Hong Kong to use when it returns to China’s control in 1997.
The New China News Agency said the designs, to be submitted by the end of March next year, “should embody the status and characteristics of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Zone and reflect the spirit of ‘one country, two systems.’ ”
It said the winning designs will be chosen by six experts and five members of a committee drafting the basic laws that will govern the British colony after 1997. The National People’s Congress, China’s parliament, will formally approve the designs.
