Snow Chief shook off two challenges in the turn and held off fast-closing Red Attack to win the $271,700 Oaklawn Handicap in track-record time Friday at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark.
Despite carrying 123 pounds and spotting his opponents from 5 to 15 pounds, the Eclipse Award 3-year-old winner of 1986 covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:46 3/5. That is 1/5 below the record set by Wild Again when he won the same race in 1984.
Snow Chief, the richest horse in training, earned $163,020, pushing his earnings past $3.3 million. Trainer Mel Stute said Snow Chief would not race again until June at Hollywood Park.
Alex Solis rode the winner, who paid $3.60, $3.20 and $3.
