Decathlete Scott Hartman, a 19-year-old freshman at Tennessee, was critically injured in the Kentucky Relays at Lexington, Ky., when he was struck in the back of the head by a hammer.
Hartman and a teammate were warming up for the hammer throw when an errant hammer hit Hartman at the base of the skull. Hartman was taken to Central Baptist Hospital. He was listed in critical condition following surgery.
Hartman, from Brentwood, Tenn., won last year’s state decathlon championship.
