A very grand production of Verdi’s “Aida” opens Saturday at the 3,200-year-old temple in Luxor, Egypt. Egyptian businessman Fawzi Metwalli, saying, “I wanted to bring Aida home,” told reporters Thursday the production--costing $10 million, featuring a cast of 1,200 and supertenor Placido Domingo as Radames--is not selling out. Of 35,000 tickets available for the 10-night run at $250 to $750 apiece, only 14,000 have been sold. But the cream of Europe’s jet set is expected to attend, even though Metwalli refused to divulge names of celebrities expected to fly to Luxor’s new international airport from Europe on chartered supersonic Concorde airliners.
