The Nation : Shultz Rejects Subpoena

Secretary of State George P. Shultz returned as unacceptable a subpoena from a House subcommittee demanding documents on the security situation at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. State Department spokesman Charles Redman called the subpoena “outrageous,” asserting that the department had already supplied the committee with everything it wanted before the subpoena was voted. He also said members of the panel were told they could read up to 160 highly classified documents at the State Department, but could not carry them away. In a related development, the Senate Appropriations Committee voted to force the State Department to tear down the U.S. Embassy office building in Moscow. The building reportedly is laced with Soviet bugging devices.
