Lutherans Choose Leader

COLUMBUS, Ohio, — American Lutherans chose the Rev. Herbert Chilstrom, 55, of Minnesota as their presiding bishop today and charged him with guiding the new Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in its first four years.
Chilstrom was elected on the ninth ballot in a complex election process that began with 67 candidates and was narrowed over two days of voting to a contest between Chilstrom and Bishop David Preus, head of the American Lutheran Church. The vote was 626 to 411.
