Heavy rain and thunderstorms swept over the Midwest and into the South, triggering flash floods and bringing lightning that killed one man in Mississippi, authorities said. One of the strongest thunderstorms hit the Louisiana community of Lake Providence, damaging 18 houses and knocking out power. Thunderstorms hit Scottsbluff, Neb., where winds gusted to 47 m.p.h., and large hailstones pelted Fisher Lake, Iowa; Jacksonville, Ark., and parts of Kansas and Ohio. Hail also bombarded St. Matthews, S.C., piling up on the ground to a depth of six inches.
