Orange County College Baseball : Ken Garcia’s Single Lifts Fullerton, 6-5

Ken Garcia broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning with a two-run single, then threw out a runner at the plate for the game’s final out as Cal State Fullerton defeated San Jose State, 6-5, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball game Sunday at Fullerton.

Longo Garcia (10-2) went the distance as Fullerton (16-2, 39-14) won its fifth consecutive game.

Garcia got the first two outs in the ninth but walked two batters and allowed a single to load the bases. Tom Hutler singled to right to score Todd Eagan, but Ken Garcia’s throw to catcher Mike Ham easily retired Rod Pierce.

San Jose State is 8-10, 31-24.

In other PCAA play:

UC Irvine 3, University of the Pacific 2--The Anteaters scored two runs on sacrifice flies in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie. Mike Sugar reached base on an error and John Seeburger followed with his 22nd double, which set a single-season school record. Then Gordon Staab and Chris Gallego hit sacrifice flies for Irvine (10-8, 24-26).

Seeburger broke Terry Stupy’s record of 21 doubles, set in 1974, the year Irvine won the Division II championship.

Jeff Haack (3-4) allowed five hits in 7 innings; Kevin Kandalaft worked 1 innings for his fifth save.

UCI’s Stacy Parker hit a home run, his first, in the third. Pacific fell to 6-12, 18-32.
