South Korean riot police and hundreds of supporters of Roman Catholic priests fasting for political reform clashed outside Seoul’s Myondong Cathedral, slightly injuring several people, sources said. Church officials said the clash occurred after 62 priests who had been on a hunger strike at the cathedral since April 27 ended their protest. Catholic and Protestant clergymen in at least six cities have been fasting to protest President Chun Doo Hwan’s decision to have his successor chosen in February by the 5,000-member electoral college system rather than allow direct elections.
