Former President Babrak Karmal of Afghanistan, who was reported jailed over the weekend, is in the Soviet Union for medical treatment, Kabul radio said. The broadcast, monitored in Pakistan, said that Karmal, 58, left Kabul for care and rest “at the invitation and advice of doctors.” Earlier, the official New China News Agency reported that Karmal had been arrested and jailed.
