At least 5% of the World Bank’s 6,000 jobs will be abolished, and employees will report to four new senior vice presidents under a fiscal and organizational shake-up ordered by bank President Barber B. Conable Jr. He estimated that the changes could cost as much as $150 million but eventually could save the bank up to $50 million a year. He also doubled the number of senior vice presidents to four, creating new branches devoted to administration, policy, planning and research. By June 1, when most changes should be in place, at least 300 and as many as 600 of the jobs will be eliminated, most in middle management, Conable said. Some workers will be retrained for new jobs, but others will be fired or retired early.
