The father of the first American slain in an attack by U.S.-backed contras said his son was shot to death at point-blank range after being wounded by shrapnel and gunfire last week. His statement contradicted earlier reports that Benjamin E. Linder, 27, an engineer aiding rural development in Nicaragua, was killed in a grenade attack. “What I am telling you is they blew his brains out at gunpoint there, as he lay wounded at the site,” David Linder said at a news conference in Managua, Nicaragua. A pathologist, Linder said he based his assertion on medical records and testimony by a Nicaraguan forensic specialist.
