So how come they don’t make good movies in Hollywood (Calendar Letters, April 19)?
My guess would be that they don’t know how, but I’m left to wonder why they don’t learn. Charlie Chaplin tried to teach them. Orson Welles tried. The French nation. . . .
John Sayles is trying. There you go. Go see one of his movies.
Oh, and afterward, consider the words of Jean Cocteau: “Film will become an art only when its materials are as inexpensive as pencil and paper.”
