Vietnam ‘Boat People’ Exodus Increasing

BANGKOK — The number of people fleeing Vietnam in boats is rising, with the exodus more than doubling between February and March, a relief official said here Friday.
A spokesman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said the March total of 2,531 “boat people” was the highest since June, 1986, when 2,767 landed in Southeast Asian countries. In February, 1,117 Vietnamese fled their country.
