Thirteen people were reported killed in India’s Punjab state as Sikh extremists stepped up their separatist drive. The latest slayings raised to more than 330 the number of deaths blamed on Sikh militants this year. Last year, 700 were killed. The violence prompted eight Parliament members from Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s party to call for the removal of the Punjab state government. The eight, all from Punjab, urged Gandhi to remove Chief Minister Surgit Singh Barnala to clear the way for tackling “this alarming situation.”
