“The Best of Booker T. & the MGs.” Stax. Organist Booker T. Jones and the MGs (guitarist Steve Cropper, bassist Donald Dunn and drummer Al Jackson Jr.) formed one of the most respected and productive rhythm sections ever in rock. Besides their own instrumental hits (the varied material on this 70-minute, CD-only package ranges from “Hang ‘Em High” to “Mrs. Robinson”), the Memphis musicians played on dozens of ‘60s recordings by such R&B; greats as Otis Redding and Eddie Floyd. The MGs’ arrangements were consistently tailored, tasteful and fresh. Sound quality: good. *** 1/2
