A jewelry store owner was in stable condition Tuesday after he was shot in the chest by one of three men who smashed display cases and took off with an undetermined amount of jewelry, police said.
Tony Allegria, 64, underwent surgery at Whittier Presbyterian Hospital for a single gunshot wound after the 2:10 p.m. attack, Police Lt. John Rees said.
Rees said three black men in their early 20s were seen leaving the vicinity in a two-tone brown van, heading north on Hacienda Boulevard after the robbery.
Rees said investigators are still trying to piece together what led to the shooting. “Mr. Allegria has not been able to talk to us,” he said. The owner was not armed, he said.
