Jackson Offers ’88 Role, Hatcher Says

GARY, Ind. — Mayor Richard G. Hatcher, defeated last week in his bid for a sixth term, said Tuesday that the Rev. Jesse Jackson has asked him to help with Jackson’s campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Hatcher said he had spoken Tuesday morning with Jackson, but declined to comment on what role he had been offered with the Jackson campaign. Hatcher said he had not decided whether to accept the offer.
“It’s much too early to make judgments about my own future, and it will be a while before I will do that,” said Hatcher, who lost to Thomas V. Barnes in the Democratic mayoral primary.
“I will serve the rest of my term and promote those projects I believe in and get as much done between now and the end of the year as I possibly can,” he said.
