Hart’s Withdrawal From the Presidential Campaign

It is so depressing to realize that the media, both newspapers and television, which have the ability to use this very influential power in such a beneficial way, repeatedly insist upon reporting scandal after monotonous scandal.

In just the past couple of months, the media have successfully managed to turn the divorce of actress Joan Collins into a major public event, have forced the resignation of Al Campanis from the Los Angeles Dodgers for one slip-up, have turned the President from a hero among the American people into a scapegoat, and now have ruined the career, reputation and family of Gary Hart.

Frankly, I have become very disillusioned with the media’s seek-and-destroy attitude, and I find it insulting to think that reporters feel the American public enjoys reading and listening to stories about the ruined lives and integrity of people day after day after day.

Any person with any degree of compassion and sensitivity would tell you this is not the case. As for those who do enjoy sensationalism, well, that is what the tabloids are for. How silly of me to think that the days of the muckrakers were over.
