Stanford Charged With ‘100 Years of Racism’ in Protest

STANFORD, Calif. — Minority student groups demonstrated Thursday to protest “100 years of racism” at Stanford University during the start of a celebration commemorating the 100th anniversary of the laying of the university’s cornerstone.
About 150 students, many of them holding black balloons, gathered at White Plaza to hear speakers representing black, American Indian, Chicano and Latino groups. The protest was peaceful and there were no arrests.
Last week, minority students issued 10 demands to university President Donald Kennedy, including establishment of a provost to oversee minority affairs, creation of a budget for minority admissions, creation of departments to study minorities and appointment of a commission to study racism and minority life on campus. Provost James Rosse said the demands are being studied.
