The UC San Diego mathematics department has received $625,000 from an anonymous donor for a three-year program designed to expand math education and increase the number of junior and senior high school teachers.
UCSD officials said the donation will be used to pay for a four-week program designed to improve math skills for “crossover” teachers, who have little or no preparation in math. Crossover teachers are instructors trained in another subject, but who transfer to another subject area because of a teacher shortage.
The money also will be used to aid high school students who have taken math courses at the university level.
The grant comes at a time of a substantial reduction in students in the math department, university officials said.
