Comments Made at Casey Funeral

Bishop John McGann’s comments at the funeral of William Casey about the Nicaraguan conflict constituted the worst possible abuse of office and of privilege that I can imagine.
McGann’s personal views in the matter are worth no more than my own. For him to have exploited the occasion from the pulpit at a funeral service to get worldwide attention for his personal opinion is intolerable.
As a Roman Catholic and as a concerned citizen, I deplore and strongly resent his remarks. He has as much right as anyone else to express himself on national issues, and could have called a press conference for the purpose or he could write a letter to a newspaper. But he had no right to exploit the occasion of the funeral of a personal friend to do this to a captive audience, and to the world’s press.
