John McEnroe, representing the United States for the first time in two years, helped his country to a 2-0 victory in a best-of-three series against Spain in the $750,000 Peugeot World Team Cup tennis tournament in Duesseldorf, West Germany.
McEnroe beat Spain’s No. 1 player, Emilio Sanchez, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. Earlier, Brad Gilbert, the No. 2 player for the United States, beat Sergio Casals, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The remaining U.S.-Spain doubles match was postponed because of darkness.
