A 22-year-old sailor was killed early Monday when his motorcycle went out of control on Interstate 5 in Oceanside and he was thrown into the path of two vehicles that did not stop after hitting him, California Highway Patrol spokesman Jerry Bohrer said.
Troy S. Kelley, a crewman aboard the Long Beach-based battleship New Jersey, was pronounced dead at the scene. Kelley was hit by a small white vehicle that witnesses described variously as a van or a pickup truck. Seconds later, an unidentified car struck Kelley.
CHP officers are calling the accident a hit-and-run because neither vehicle stopped.
“The tragic part is that the people did nothing wrong if they would have just stopped,” said Bohrer. Now they face felony hit-and-run charges, he said.
