BRIGHAM CITY, Utah — The first major firing test of a fully redesigned joint for the space shuttle’s solid-fuel booster rockets is planned for today, according to a spokesman for Morton Thiokol.
The test, the fifth in a series of about 10 simulations, is considered a preliminary step to the first full-scale test of the redesigned booster scheduled for late August, company spokesman Rocky Raab said Monday.
Engineers planned to fire 380 pounds of solid propellant to simulate launch conditions in the redesigned joint between the boosters’ four segments.
