Boy, 10, Suffers Serious Burns

A 10-year-old San Diego boy who was apparently attempting to start a fire was engulfed in flames Sunday and seriously injured, police said.
The victim, Rafael Ayala, suffered burns on 10% of his body, authorities said. He was was listed in fair condition at the burn unit of the UC San Diego Medical Center.
The incident apparently occurred as the boy and two other youths were using paint thinner in an effort to start a fire, police said.
The incident occurred at 6:39 p.m. at Ayala’s residence on south 36th Street, police said.
It was not immediately known exactly how the incident occurred.
Police and fire officials from the metropolitan arson strike team were investigating the incident.
