K mart’s earnings rose 22.8% to $145.4 million in the second quarter. The Troy, Mich.-based retailer said the results were due to well-managed merchandising and advertising programs, better displays in stores and better promotional advertising. Sales increased 7.2% to $6.3 billion. K mart, the nation’s second-largest retailer after Sears, Roebuck & Co., operated 3,757 retail outlets as of July 29.
