Fake Air Controller Tried to Give False Landing Orders to Jet

NEW YORK — The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating an incident in which a radio operator posing as an air traffic controller tried to provide false landing instructions to a plane coming into La Guardia Airport, an agency spokeswoman said Monday.
The incident occurred last Tuesday, when a man’s voice, speaking on a frequency reserved for the control tower, ordered an airline pilot to “make a go-around” before landing, FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said.
However, the broadcast was not picked up on the incoming aircraft, only in the airport control tower, and “had no impact at all on air traffic,” she said. The FAA has been provided tapes of the incident.
