South Korea Accepts IOC Proposal on Sharing 1988 Olympics

South Korea informed the International Olympic Committee that it has accepted a final IOC proposal on sharing part of the 1988 Summer Olympics with North Korea.

Kim Chong-ha, president of the South Korean National Olympic Committee, sent a reply to IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch saying Seoul agreed to let North Korea stage archery, table tennis, women’s volleyball, one of the soccer preliminary groups and the 100-kilometer cycling team time trial, according to a spokesman for Kim.

The IOC package was presented when the IOC and Olympic officials of South and North Korea held meetings in Lausanne, Switzerland, last month. The IOC asked both nations to reply to the proposal by Sept. 17, when invitations are scheduled to be sent out for the Seoul games.

North Korea continues to demand that more Olympic events be held in its territory.

Officials in the capital city of Pyongyang said North Korea wants to stage all the soccer tournament, replace cycling with another event and also share the staging of one other event.
