A 34-year-old El Cajon man died Sunday of injuries suffered when his single-engine experimental aircraft crashed a half-mile southwest of the Ramona airport.
Jeffery Scot Sawyer, a hotel chain employee, died at 3:39 p.m. at Grossmont Hospital after being taken there by Life Flight helicopter. Sawyer had taken off from Ramona and made several low-level passes over a nearby field when a portion of the plane’s tail fell off, sending the craft into an uncontrollable spin, witnesses said.
Sawyer was alone in the plane and was reportedly practicing for an upcoming race in Reno for experimental aircraft.
