PHOENIX — More Arizonans now support a recall of Gov. Evan Mecham than oppose it, according to a survey released Sunday.
In the poll, conducted by the Arizona Republic and Phoenix television station KTVK-TV, 47% of the Arizona residents surveyed said that Mecham should be recalled, while 41% opposed a recall vote and 12% were undecided.
The opinion sampling from 800 Arizona voters was taken two days after a controversial fund-raising letter for Mecham surfaced.
The letter said the recall movement was spearheaded by “militant liberals and the homosexual lobby,” encouraged conservatives nationwide to move to Arizona and donate $1.2 million to help Mecham fight the recall movement.
The letter was signed by the governor’s signature machine and mailed to 20,000 conservatives.
