Twelve high school-aged juveniles gathered on the side of a road near Rio Vista were injured, four of them seriously, when a car swerved into them, the California Highway Patrol said. A CHP spokeswoman said the large group of young men and women and some of their vehicles were gathered by the side of River Road near the Sacramento River Delta. Two of the youths, she said, walked out on the roadway in front of a car. “The vehicle swerved and missed the two in the roadway,” the spokeswoman said, “losing control and sideswiping a pickup truck coming the other way. The vehicle then crossed the road, hitting pedestrians as it went and then hit another pickup, pushing it into still another pickup in front of it. There were people standing in between the two pickups at the time.” The 12 injured youths were taken by helicopter and ambulance to nearby hospitals.
