Water Down the Drain

I find it outrageous that developers, having destroyed the historic La Reina Theatre to build yet another redundant shopping center, are now being allowed to deplete our precious water table because it interferes with their parking structure.
The Times reports (Oct. 3) that the developers will be fined for the amount of water they pump daily into storm drains, where it goes off to sea, wasted and useless to this parched city. What is money to these people, who spend it wantonly in their own self-interest? Their money clearly speaks more loudly than the protests of citizens of the community.
While our water table goes down the drain, on what will the 50-foot deodar pine in front of my house and the other beautiful trees of Sherman Oaks live? And on what will we live in the inevitable drought periods?
Overdevelopment in the Valley has already gone far beyond what we who live here want, but it must stop before it destroys our irreplaceable natural resources.
