40th Birthday Salute for Hostage

WASHINGTON — Under gray skies and in a driving rain, a somber 40th birthday salute was held today for American hostage Terry Anderson, held in the Middle East longer than any of 22 foreign captives.
“This is for you, Terry,” Anderson’s sister, Peggy Say, told a gathering outside the Jefferson Memorial of about 100 people, including 22 schoolchildren, each with a cardboard star embossed with the name of a hostage. “I don’t know hardly what to say to you anymore. Happy birthday doesn’t seem appropriate,” said Say, noting that Anderson probably spent his 40th birthday as he has his 955 earlier days as a hostage--in a tiny, barren room.
