The Irish Republican Army’s top bomb-maker, a 27-year-old electronics wizard, was sentenced by a London jury to 25 years in prison. The 11-member panel found Gilbert McNamee guilty of conspiring to cause explosions, including the 1982 nail bomb attack on the Queen’s Household Cavalry in Hyde Park, which killed four mounted soldiers and seven horses. The prosecution said that McNamee had been linked to the Hyde Park blast by fingerprints on two small fragments of circuit boards from the radio-controlled bomb that were found in the park. Throughout the trial, McNamee denied being a member of the IRA or making bombs for the group.
