Health officials in San Francisco have announced the award of a 4-year, $7.1-million federal grant to study methods of preventing the spread of AIDS to members of minority groups. “We know minorities have the highest risk for AIDS,” said Dr. Stephen B. Hulley, professor of epidemiology, medicine and health policy at the University of California, San Francisco, at a news conference called to announce the first federal grant of its kind. Officials said the grant by the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Drug Abuse is unique in that the research will not focus on the homosexual community, where, researchers say, the spread of acquired immune deficiency syndrome has been stabilized.
