A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was charged Monday with embezzling $59,000 from the county by claiming overtime pay for hours he did not work.
Willard Burney, 41, a five-year member of the Sheriff’s Department, was accused of submitting false time sheets claiming 2,156 hours of overtime between Jan. 1, 1985, and last Aug. 20, sheriff’s spokesman Richard Dinsmoor said.
Burney, who had been working in the County Jail, is expected to surrender Thursday in Los Angeles Municipal Court. He faces a maximum of four years in prison, Deputy Dist. Atty. Lawrence E. Mason said.
