Standard Poll Closings Bill Gains

WASHINGTON — The House, concerned that network projections of election winners discourage voter turnout in Western states, voted 208 to 189 today to require a simultaneous poll closing time of 9 p.m. EST in presidential general elections. The Senate Rules Committee is expected to hold hearings early next year on a similar bill but the outlook for passage there is uncertain.
