Although it once looked as though there wouldn’t be a Ladies Professional Golf Assn. tournament here next year, the LPGA will be back after all, with a new look. The AI Star-Centinela Hospital tournament, a $400,000 tour event, will be played April 11-17 at Rancho Park. AI Star is a multinational conglomerate.
A three-day, 54-hole event, the AI Star-Centinela tournament’s principal beneficiary is Centinela Hospital’s Children’s Charity Fund, which provides medical care for children suffering from catastrophic disease and injury.
The AI Star-Centinela tournament replaces the Glendale Federal tournament on the tour.
Rancho Park Golf Course, the most-played municipal golf course in the country, was the site of the Los Angeles Open from 1956-1972 and in 1983. In addition, the Sunstar tournament was played at Rancho Park in 1978 and ’79.
