Reward for Palme Killer Increased to $8.25 Million

STOCKHOLM — The government today raised the reward for information on the killer of Prime Minister Olof Palme to 50 million kronor, or about $8.25 million.
It was the second dramatic increase in the reward since Palme’s slaying in February, 1986. The initial reward offered was about $83,000.
Police have received about 14,000 leads in the case. The flow increased after the reward was raised last February to about $830,000.
Palme had been prime minister for 11 years when he was shot on a downtown Stockholm street.
The government said the reward would be given for “decisive information” about the case. It didn’t specify that the information would have to lead to Palme’s killer. Ingvar Eriksson, a spokesman for the police investigating squad, said the increase was intended as a “shortcut” to produce decisive evidence.
